Deficiencies in displayed heart rate data

Changes in heart rate are usually continuously displayed by wearable devices or their apps.

We need to understand that – unlike the R-R or beat to beat interval series used more frequently in science – this kind of time series lacks two pieces of information:

depending on the length of the time window, the time series is “smoothed out”, thus the original patterns of subtle changes are lost

=

the original patterns of time series occurring between heartbeats disappear, as we treat heartbeats as events occurring in a given time, thus the subtle differences between the original numeric values are smoothed out.
